A lot of things are motivated by other means, however religion (along with sin and guilt) is a very fundamental and useful tool. It is also interesting to note that this is why the Catholic church prospered as much as it did -- Protestants believe that everybody lives in grace, so it's a tad hard for you to leverage sin and guilt. On the other hand, Catholics believe that everyone lives in sin, so it's quite easy to manipulate this belief into other things. Well, hasn’t it always been like that?
